A scandal has rocked the North Gonja District following allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) vetting committee extorted GHC17,000 from aspirants vying for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE).
The NDC, fresh from its December 2024 electoral victory, is in the process of nominating Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives across the country. A letter issued by the party outlined guidelines for the selection process, signaling the start of the nomination exercise. However, in North Gonja, accusations of corruption have marred the process.
According to reports, the committee allegedly charged an “appearance fee” of GHC1,000 from 17 aspirants who made it to the regional level. One aspirant, Mr. Musah Taluta, who contributed significantly to the NDC’s victory in the constituency, refused to pay the fee, resulting in his disqualification.
The exclusion of Mr. Taluta and the allegations of extortion have deepened divisions within the newly-elected party in the district. Concerns are growing over fairness and transparency, with critics describing the process as a “money-grabbing spree.”
Seven aspirants—Abdulai Nashiru, Alidu Abdul-Wahab, Sumani Hudu, Prosper Gidisu, Abukari Issah, Baba Basig Diaboh, and Issahaku Karim—have been shortlisted to proceed to the next stage in Damongo, the Savannah Region’s administrative capital. However, it remains unclear whether further fees will be demanded.
Public Outrage and Calls for Accountability
The allegations have triggered widespread condemnation, with many describing the NDC’s actions in North Gonja as a “disgusting display of corruption.” Constituents from affected zones, particularly Yagbon and Mankarigu, have reportedly vowed to reconsider their support for the party in future elections.
The Dream Patriots, a local advocacy group, has expressed outrage over the allegations and announced plans to petition the Special Prosecutor and other relevant bodies for a thorough investigation. In a statement, the group called on the NDC to address the issue promptly, emphasizing that the integrity of the district is at stake.
“The reputation of North Gonja must not be trampled upon. We demand accountability and inclusive leadership,” the statement read.
As tensions rise, the future of the DCE nomination process in North Gonja remains uncertain, with many constituents and stakeholders watching closely for the party’s response to these serious allegations.
