Ghana Water Limited (GWL), led by its Managing Director, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has officially commenced the next phase of the Damongo Water Project following a series of stakeholder engagements in the Savannah Region. On June 15, 2026, the Managing Director, accompanied by his deputies and technical experts, paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, to formally announce the start of key preparatory activities, including the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Right of Way acquisition, and compensation processes for Project Affected Persons (PAPs).

The project has received a major boost after securing Commitment Authorisation from the Ministry of Finance, while the European Union and its development partners reaffirmed their support for financing the Damongo and Tamale Water Supply Projects. To ensure smooth implementation, a committee has been established and introduced to traditional authorities whose communities will directly benefit from the project. The committee will coordinate stakeholder consultations, public education, and other preparatory activities necessary for successful execution.
Addressing the Yagbonwura and his council, Hon. Mutawakilu highlighted the importance of transparency, collaboration, and community participation throughout the project. He revealed that funding arrangements have been completed and that the project is expected to produce approximately 135,000 cubic metres of water daily, providing sustainable potable water to both Tamale and Damongo. He noted that the initiative fulfills President John Dramani Mahamaโs commitment to resolving the persistent water challenges facing Damongo and surrounding communities.
The Yagbonwura welcomed the initiative and pledged the support of the Gonja Traditional Council. A prayer session was held at the Jakpa Palace with Islamic Quranic recitation to bless the successful execution of the project.
The GWL delegation also paid courtesy calls on the Damongowura, Busunuwura, Yapeiwura, and Kusawguwura to strengthen community support for the project.
The delegation included deputy Managing Directors Ing. Baidoo (Managing Director, Operations) and Mr. Lucas (Managing Director, Finance and Administration), as well as Ing. Agyekum (Chief Manager, Policy, Planning and Development), Madam Perpetual (Chief Manager, Lands and Estates), and Mr. Stanley (Chief Manager, Public Relations)
Additionally, local media liaison officers, including Zulkanin Abdulai, Mudasiru Afari Techi, and Munira Baba, have been appointed to enhance public engagement and information dissemination. Upon completion, the Tamale-Damongo Water Supply Project is expected to improve access to clean water, promote economic development, and enhance public health outcomes across the Savannah Region.
