A coalition of residents under the banner Concerned Citizens of Damongo, aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a strong ultimatum to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the current NDC-led administration, demanding the immediate commissioning of the completed Damongo Alternative Water Supply System, popularly known as the Broto Water Project.

At a press conference held on Tuesday, 10th June, 2025 at Damongo, the group, led by Kadiri Abdul-Rahaman, Constituency Secretary of the NPP in the Damongo Constituency, expressed deep frustration over what they describe as a “deliberate refusal” to operationalize the water facility. The project, which began exactly a year ago on June 10, 2024, was initiated by the NPP government through the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, and financed with a loan from EXIM Bank. The construction, undertaken by Dannak Engineering under the supervision of the GWCL, was completed in December 2024 at a reported cost of GH₵ 17,074,113.58.

“This historic edifice, which cost taxpayers over GH₵ 17 million, sits idle while the people of Damongo continue to suffer from chronic water shortages,” Abdul-Rahaman lamented. “It is unacceptable. The continued inaction is not only a waste of national resources but also a betrayal of the people’s trust.”
The group did not mince words in criticizing former MP and current GWCL Managing Director, Hon. Adams Mutawakilu (Garlus), accusing him of sabotaging the project due to political bias. They referenced past comments by Hon. Garlus, who reportedly mocked the project as “just a well water” during the election campaign season. “If it is truly just a well, then commission it and bring us the better option you promised,” Abdul-Rahaman dared.

With tensions rising over what has become a critical public health and human dignity issue, the Concerned Citizens of Damongo have vowed to intensify their pressure through organized mobilization and public protest if the water system is not activated immediately.
“Let it be on record that we will not relent, we will not remain silent, we will mobilize, we will protest, and we will demand accountability until this water project is made fully operational,” the group declared.
They ended their statement with a rallying cry:
#CommissionTheBrotoWaterNow
The Broto Water Project was envisioned to solve the acute water supply challenges in Damongo and surrounding communities. With the facility complete but idle for nearly six months, residents are calling on authorities to rise above political interests and prioritize the wellbeing of the constituency.
