The West Gonja municipal Assembly has spearheaded a major clearing operation targeting heaped refuse dumps at the Galamsey Station and 7.7 Junction in the Hangaline electoral area.

The clearing exercise, which took place on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, was in response to growing concerns from residents over the deteriorating sanitation conditions at the two sites. The refuse heaps had accumulated over time, posing significant health risks to residents in the area.

In an interview with the Assemblyman for the area, Hon. Kumatey Gorden, he disclosed that the initiative followed multiple appeals from residents and a series of consultations with key stakeholders, including officials from Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, the Damongo integrated Recycling and Compost plant Ltd and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Castro.

“The refuse dumps had become not only an eyesore but also a breeding ground for diseases,” Hon. Kumatey stated. “Through collaborative efforts, we have taken a crucial step in safeguarding the health of our people.”

He explaibed that the operation was a joint effort involving the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, the Damongo integrated Recycling and Compost plant Ltd and the office of the Assembly Member. In addition to clearing the refuse, the initiative also sought to educate residents on proper waste disposal practices to prevent future reoccurrence.

Hon. Kumatey expressed his gratitude to the MCE, Hon. Yakubu Castro and the Municipal Assembly for their swift response and support, as well as to the local media for amplifying the residents’ concerns. He also commended Mr. Zakaria Budali, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Zoomlion and the Damongo integrated Recycling and Compost plant officers who worked tirelessly throughout the day to ensure the success of the clearing.

The exercise highlights the importance of community engagement and institutional collaboration in tackling environmental challenges and promoting public health across the municipality.
