Damongo Senior High School (DASS) has earned a spot in the national finals of the Energy Commission’s Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge after placing third in the Northern Zone competition.
The Savannah Region-based school impressed judges with a pioneering project that converts food waste into biodegradable plastic, presenting a sustainable alternative for domestic and industrial use. Competing against six other schools, including Sunyani SHS, Kintampo SHS, and Dabokpa Technical Institute, DASS’s eco-friendly solution earned them a crucial top-three finish.

Dabokpa Technical Institute placed first, followed by Ola Girls in second. The three schools now advance to the grand finale, where they will join Southern Zone qualifiers: Presec Legon, Adidome SHS, and Ahantaman Girls.
The annual challenge, a collaboration between the Energy Commission and Ghana Education Service, promotes innovation in renewable energy and sustainability among second-cycle institutions. A key feature of the competition is the use of locally available materials — a principle DASS embodied in their bio-plastic project.
