The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Savannah region has held its 2023 mid-year membership performance review meeting at Damongo with an appeal to members to renew their membership promptly to avoid the one month waiting period which applies when one fails to renew his/her membership for more than three months.
The event which was held on Thursday, 28th July, 2023 saw the attendance of staff from all five District Offices and all staff of the Savannah Regional Office.
The acting Regional Director, Chief Dauda Mahama, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to assess their performance for the past two quarters and to strategize to achieve their annual targets in terms of membership drive and revenue mobilisation.
According to him, the region had an annual membership target of 450,986 but as at mid year, they achieved 59% of the target which he considered not encouraging .
Chief Dauda Mahama also mentioned that the membership growth was slow in the first quarter due to people’s reluctance to register or renew during holidays, but they saw improvements in the second quarter, adding that the NHIA exceeded their performance target by 6% compared to the previous year.
Mr. Titus Sori, the acting Director in-charge of the Northern belt ( the five Northern regions) of the NHIA, also acknowledged a marginal growth and improvement in membership from 2022 to 2023 and expressed optimism for further improvements, especially with members renewing their membership.
Regarding access to healthcare, he said the NHIA has credentialed 132 facilities in the Savannah region, made up of public, private and CHAG facilities to provide accessible and affordable health care services to NHIS Active members.
He added that about 95% of revenue of facilities operating with NHIA nationwide comes from the NHIS, making the scheme vital for service providers and therefore urged all members of the scheme to renew their membership promptly to avoid the one month waiting period which applies when one fails to renew his/her membership for more than three months.
He also appealed to those without NHIS cards to register as members to avoid cash and carry when they fall sick and had to visit any health facility.
