Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 election, addressed a large and enthusiastic youth at Damongo in youth connect program during his tour of the Savannah Region on Wednesday, 15th May, 2024, expressing his optimism for victory in the upcoming elections.
He emphasized that the campaign is centered on the future of Ghana, particularly focusing on youth and economic development.
“We are going to be victorious in the 2024 election, Inshallah,” Dr. Bawumia declared, highlighting the importance of the decisions to be made on December 7. “This election will determine whether we move forward or backward.”
Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for a transformed economy that prioritizes job creation for the youth and reducing the cost of living. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but reassured the crowd of his commitment to addressing these issues. “It is possible to transform our economy, to create jobs, and to change our ways of life,” he asserted.
Addressing concerns from nursing trainees about delayed allowances, Dr. Bawumia announced that the Ministry of Finance would transfer 177 million Ghana cedis to the Ministry of Health, ensuring that allowances are disbursed by next week. “We restored your allowances when they were cancelled before we took office, and we will ensure they continue to be paid regularly,” he promised.
Dr. Bawumia also touted the NPP’s achievements in education, particularly the implementation of free senior high school education, which has increased enrollment from 800,000 to 1.4 million students. He emphasized the significant strides towards gender parity, with more girls now enrolled in senior high schools than boys. Additionally, he highlighted the investment in technical and vocational education and training (TVET), expanding enrollment from 60,000 to 159,000 students and investing 6 billion Ghana cedis over the past seven years.
Expanding on his plans for digital transformation, Dr. Bawumia mentioned the successful rollout of the Ghana card and mobile money interoperability, positioning Ghana as a leader in these areas in Africa. “Today, Ghana is the fastest-growing mobile money market in Africa, and the largest medical drone delivery service in the world is here in Ghana,” he stated.
For the Savannah region, Dr. Bawumia promised to focus on agriculture, turning it into the breadbasket of Ghana and West Africa. He also pledged to establish a regional university and build a regional hospital in Damongo to improve healthcare access.
Dr. Bawumia concluded with a call for support, urging Ghanaians to give him the opportunity to lead the country towards prosperity. “Give me the vehicle, let me be the main strap driver. Let me take control of this vehicle for us to achieve prosperity in Ghana,” he appealed.
The NPP candidate’s speech was met with cheers and applause, reflecting the crowd’s support and optimism for his vision for Ghana’s future.
