Former President John Dramani Mahama, Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured Ghanaians that his next government will prioritize the transformation of the country’s energy sector, tackling the current challenges and positioning it as the backbone of a 24-hour economy.
Addressing stakeholders, Mahama acknowledged the harsh economic conditions facing Ghanaians but emphasized that “all hope is not lost.” He outlined the NDC’s well-thought-out plan, developed through extensive consultations, to restore and revitalize the energy sector.
“We will create an energy system that supports businesses to operate around the clock, driving inclusive growth, job creation, and economic prosperity,” Mahama stated.
Key highlights of the NDC’s energy sector plan include increasing power generation capacity to meet growing demand, promoting renewable energy sources, targeting 20% of total energy mix, enhancing energy efficiency through smart grid infrastructure, encouraging private sector investment in the energy sector, implementing measures to reduce energy losses and improve revenue collection.
Mahama noted that Ghana’s energy sector has been plagued by inefficiencies, with an estimated 20% of generated electricity lost due to transmission and distribution challenges. The NDC’s plan aims to reduce these losses to 10%.
The NDC’s energy sector transformation plan is expected to create 100,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector, increase energy access to 95%, and reduce electricity tariffs by 15%.
Mahama emphasized the importance of collaborative governance, stating, “We will engage with diverse groups and individuals, harnessing their insights and experiences to craft and implement effective policies.”
Ghanaians can look forward to a comprehensive and inclusive approach to energy sector development under the next NDC government.
