May 15, 2026 – Damongo
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged a donation of GHC50,000 to the Jira Yagbonwura Jewu Bii-Kunuto Education Fund as part of his “Thank You Tour” to the Savannah Region.
According to him, the support is intended to assist the King and Overlord of Gonja in realizing his vision of promoting education within the Gonja Kingdom and beyond. He emphasized that education remains a vital tool for community and national development and assured that he would continue to support the Fund whenever the need arises.

The pledge was made during his visit to the Savannah Region to thank chiefs and residents for their role in ensuring peaceful elections and for their overwhelming support for John Dramani Mahama and the NDC during the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the Jakpa Palace, Chairman Asiedu Nketia expressed appreciation to the Yagbonwura and the people of Gonja for contributing to a peaceful electoral process.
“I am here to express the gratitude of the NDC and myself to the chiefs and people of the Gonja Kingdom for their support to the NDC during the 2024 general elections. The process was fair and peaceful,” he stated.
He noted that although tensions were high ahead of the elections, with some predicting violence and instability, Ghanaians chose peace and democracy over conflict.
Chairman Asiedu Nketia also recalled events during the 2024 Damba celebrations at the Jakpa Palace, where he appealed to the Yagbonwura to collaborate with the Dagbon Kingdom and the Mamprugu Kingdom to encourage peace among the youth and political parties in Northern Ghana.
He explained that the appeal became necessary because the two main presidential candidates in the 2024 elections — John Dramani Mahama of the NDC from the Savannah Region and Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP from the North East Region — were both from Northern Ghana.
According to him, any electoral violence would have negatively affected the image of the north, especially after widespread predictions of chaos before the elections.
He further commended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding defeat early, describing the gesture as one that helped calm tensions and maintain peace after the December 2024 elections.
Chairman Asiedu Nketia praised the Yagbonwura and the leadership of the northern traditional kingdoms for their wisdom and commitment to peace before, during, and after the elections.
He added that the December 2024 elections produced one of the best presidents under Ghana’s Fourth Republic, noting that President John Mahama is receiving recognition both locally and internationally for his leadership.

Later, Chairman Asiedu Nketia addressed party faithful at the Damongo Youth Center, where he called on members of the NDC in the Damongo Constituency to remain united ahead of future presidential and parliamentary elections.
He was accompanied by Deputy National Chairman Sofo Azorka, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Yusuf Sulemana, regional and constituency executives of the NDC, party cadres, youth groups, and women’s groups.
