Bunyanso Farms Limited, in partnership with Northern Ghana Integrated Initiatives for Development (NORGIID GHANA), has launched an ambitious initiative to promote sustainable beekeeping, honey value chain development, eco-tourism, api-tourism, agri-tourism, and agro-industrial development aimed at transforming agriculture, creating jobs, protecting the environment, and stimulating rural economic growth in the Savannah Region.

The initiative forms part of a long-term strategy to harness the region’s vast natural resources and position it as a leading centre for sustainable agriculture, tourism, and agro-industrial investment in Northern Ghana.

Speaking on the initiative, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bunyanso Farms Limited and Founder and Executive Director of NORGIID GHANA, Hon. Iddrisu Sumani, said the programme is designed to unlock the enormous potential of the Savannah Region in honey production while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities, particularly for women and young people.

He noted that Bunyanso Farms Limited currently operates a 16-acre integrated beekeeping farm established in 1996, featuring cashew, shea, neem, and moringa plantations. The farm is strategically situated near the Damongo Landscape, an area renowned for its rich biodiversity and abundant bee population, making it ideal for sustainable beekeeping, premium honey production, eco-tourism, api-tourism, agri-tourism, and agro-industrial development.

According to Hon. Sumani, the combination of flowering cashew, shea, neem, and moringa trees, together with the surrounding natural vegetation, provides a conducive environment for bees throughout most of the year. This, he explained, not only enhances the production of high-quality honey but also supports crop pollination, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural productivity.

“Our vision is to move beyond traditional honey harvesting by developing a complete honey value chain that includes modern beekeeping, quality processing, packaging, branding, marketing, export, and agro-industrial processing. We also want to position the Savannah Region as a leading destination for eco-tourism, api-tourism, and agri-tourism, where visitors can experience nature, sustainable agriculture, beekeeping, and rural innovation,” he stated.

The initiative will focus on establishing modern apiaries, promoting sustainable hive management, encouraging bee-friendly farming practices, and protecting biodiversity. It also seeks to equip farmers, women, and young people with practical skills in beekeeping, honey processing, value addition, agribusiness, and sustainable tourism to enable them to build profitable enterprises.

As part of the project, Bunyanso Farms Limited and NORGIID GHANA plan to establish integrated eco-tourism, api-tourism, and agri-tourism facilities where visitors, students, researchers, investors, and tourists can participate in guided apiary tours, honey tasting sessions, hive demonstrations, farm tours, tree planting activities, environmental education programmes, bird watching, nature walks, and hands-on agricultural experiences.

The organisations also intend to attract investment into agro-industrial ventures, including honey processing, beeswax products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cashew processing, shea value addition, and other agricultural enterprises to strengthen the region’s local economy.

They believe that integrating agriculture, environmental conservation, tourism, and agro-industrial development will diversify rural incomes, create green jobs, attract both local and international investment, promote biodiversity conservation, and position the Savannah Region as a national hub for sustainable agriculture and rural enterprise development.

The initiative forms part of the organisations’ broader commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, value addition, eco-tourism, api-tourism, agri-tourism, agro-industrialisation, and inclusive rural development across Northern Ghana.

Bunyanso Farms Limited and NORGIID GHANA have therefore appealed to government agencies, development partners, private investors, research institutions, and local communities to support the initiative, describing sustainable beekeeping, honey value chain development, eco-tourism, api-tourism, agri-tourism, and agro-industrialisation as critical drivers of economic growth, environmental protection, job creation, and long-term rural transformation in the Savannah Region.
