Member of Parliament for Damongo and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has launched a private tree planting initiative dubbed “Green Damongo Project” aimed at planting over 32,000 trees in the Damongo constituency.

The project, unveiled on Friday, 14th June, 2024 emphasizes Abu Jinapor’s commitment to the greening of Ghana and combating climate change.

The initiative according to him, is divided into three phases, with the first phase involving the planting of approximately 2,670 trees along major roads and selected sites such as the old and new markets, and the stretch from Military Junction to the hospital.

The second phase will cover 66 km on each side of the road between Kojope and Damongo, and the third phase will extend 83 km between Damongo and Seyiri. Tree species such as Savannah Mahogany and Cassia have been selected for the project.

During the launch, Hon. Abu Jinapor called on the constituents to embrace their responsibility as custodians of the environment, emphasizing the importance of collective action in restoring Damongo’s degraded landscape.

He highlighted the project’s goals of raising environmental awareness and instilling the values of tree planting and nurturing in the youth.

Addressing the crowd, Hon. Jinapor said, “I stand before you today, in all humility and modesty, to say that, the Green Ghana Day initiative, has been wholeheartedly embraced by the entire citizenry and residents of Ghana. As Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, under whose stewardship this project was birthed, I have decided to bring the project home. For it is said, ‘the power of a great idea is amplified when it is shared with the place that holds your heart.’”

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries including the Municipal Chief Executive for Damongo, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari, and the Deputy CEO of Forestry Commission, Mr. Nyadia Sulemana Nelson, culminated in the planting of commemorative trees.
