Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor, Mp for Damongo who is also minister for lands and natural resources recounted some of the great achievement that most people don’t know of the late Yagbonwura Tuntumba Bore Essa I, stating
“Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa Sulemana Jakpa I distinguished himself in all spheres of life, throughout his long service as a public servant at the Ministry of Agriculture, the West Dagomba Local Council, Savelugu Local Council, and Tamale Municipal Assembly where he finally retired from public service”. He said
The law maker further mentioned the appellation the late Yagbonwura gained due to his dedication to Justice and peace
“He was nicknamed “Chairman” for his dedication to justice and peace and issues of human welfare”.
Notwithstanding, the law maker also gave the history of late Yagbonwura indicating that he is a true son of the land and hasn’t forgotten his culture.
“A royal from the Kusawgu gate, he was enskinned Saala-wura of the Kusawgu Traditional Area, Yapeiwura, and then Kusawguwura, before ascending to the revered Gonja throne, as Yagbonwura in 2010, following the demise of his predecessor, Yagbonwura Bawa Doshi, who is said to have “prophesied” about Sulemana Jakpa succeeding him as Yagbonwura”.
His almost thirteen (13) years of reign as Yagbonwura was marked with development, peace and justice. He added
“His dedication to peace transcended Gonjaland. As a member of the Committee of Eminent Chiefs for the mediation of the dispute in Dagbon, having succeeded Yagbonwura Bawa Doshi, he was very instrumental in bringing lasting peace to Dagbon, and the eventual installation of His Majesty Yaa Naa Mahama Abubakari II”.
“It was under his leadership that the Savannah Region was created by President Akufo-Addo, and Damongo, named the Capital. As a Member of Parliament for the good people of Damongo, I can attest to his unflinching commitment to the development of Damongo, and Gonjaland as a whole”.
A long-time bosom friend and collaborator of my father the Buipewura, Yagbonwura was a father figure to me, and treated me as his own son. His encouragement, support and pieces of advice to me was truly remarkable and I am eternally grateful.
This is a very solemn moment for the Gonja people. We will all miss his leadership and devotion to peace and justice. He lamented
May the soul of Jira Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa Sulemana Jakpa I and the souls of all the departed, rest and abide in the bosom of the Lord, until the last day of the resurrection when we shall meet again. He mourned
