Savannah Regional Security Council Denies Military Intervention in Debre Damba Festival
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has firmly denied claims of military intervention during the recent Damba festival celebrated in Debre. In a statement issued by the Regional Minister, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril, REGSEC clarified that no military deployment was sanctioned to protect the people of Debre during the festival.

The statement followed reports suggesting that military personnel were dispatched by political authorities to provide security for Debre residents against the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom. REGSEC categorically rejected this narrative, explaining that the soldiers observed in the area were from the 155 Armoured Regiment, which was conducting routine patrols and not providing security for the festival.

Hon. Muhazu further emphasized that any military operation within the Savannah Region must be authorized by REGSEC, and no such directive had been given. “REGSEC has not convened in the past two months and, therefore, has not sanctioned any security intervention in the Debre area,” the statement read.

The Regional Minister reiterated that the narrative of political appointees deploying military forces to safeguard Debre during the Damba festival is inaccurate, calling for calm and urging the public to disregard such rumors.

The Regional security council’s statement was issued to set the record straight and prevent the spread of misinformation regarding the event.
