The residents of Sor No.3, a farming community in the west Gonja municipality have been cut off from economic activities following heavy downpours that have rendered roads impassable.
The continuous rains, which happened on in the early hours of Tuesday, 9th July, 2024 have led to mudslides and the cut off of their road effectively isolating the community from the surrounding areas.
Residents in the area in a viral video reported that the torrential rains have damaged key access routes( Sor No. 3 and Boachepe), preventing residents from reaching their farms, which are the primary source of livelihood for many in the area. “The roads are completely submerged, and in some places, they have been washed away entirely.”
Farmers in Sor No.3 are particularly hard hit, as the timing of the downpours coincides with the crucial planting season. Many are worried about the impact this disruption will have on their crops and overall food security and could have devastating effects on the income and the food supply for their families.
The situation in Sor No.3 highlights the broader challenges faced along that stretch of road ( from Sor No. 1 , No. 2 and No. 3) during the rainy season.
Residents in this area are therefore calling for long-term solutions to enhance resilience against such natural calamities, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development practices to safeguard vulnerable populations from future disruptions.
Meanwhile, our checks reveals that, the Sor No. 1 to Sor No. 3 stretch of road has been awarded to a contractor who will be commencing work soon.
