In a press conference held on Tuesday, 30th April, 2024, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Savannah Region made startling allegations against President Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of disrespecting the Gonja Kingdom and its traditional leadership during the 48th Annual Gonjaland Youth Association Congress.
Led by the party’s regional communications officer, Mr. R. A. Jalil, the NDC criticized President Akufo-Addo’s behavior at the event held in Damongo, the traditional hub of Gonjaland.
The party alleged that the President’s actions, including arriving late, speaking out of turn, and speaking before the King of Gonjas, Jirah Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, were disrespectful and contrary to established protocol.
The NDC further expressed dissatisfaction with the President’s abrupt departure from the event without addressing the concerns of the King and the Gonjaland Youth Association, which they argued deepened the sense of indignation among attendees.
Mr. Jalil emphasized that President Akufo-Addo’s alledged conduct was perceived as part of a larger pattern of disrespect towards traditional leadership and the chieftaincy institution.
The NDC also raised questions about the President’s commitment to fulfilling promises made to the Gonjaland people, including infrastructure projects and job creation initiatives.
In response to these allegations, the NDC expressed solidarity with former President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting his integrity and track record as a nation-builder and endorsed Mahama’s proposed 24-hour Economy initiative as a solution to address unemployment and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Amidst the perceived fallout from the Congress, the NDC called for accountability and respect for traditional institutions to remain paramount and also underscored the importance of upholding customs and traditions while fulfilling promises made to the people of Gonjaland and the Savannah region at large.
