Former Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Dr. Ing. Clifford Braimah, has officially filed his nomination to contest the Savannah Regional Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pledging to restore unity, strengthen party structures, and position the party for victory in the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Braimah submitted his nomination forms at the NPP Savannah Regional Party Office in Damongo on Friday, July 17, 2026, where he outlined his vision to rejuvenate the party following what he described as its current difficult political situation in the region.

Addressing party members and the media after filing his nomination, Dr. Braimah expressed concern over the NPP’s declining electoral fortunes in the Savannah Region, noting that the party’s parliamentary representation had dropped from three seats to one out of the region’s seven constituencies.

“The Savannah Region is a new region, and we all know the state of the party today. We have fallen from three parliamentary seats to one, and our popular votes have equally reduced. Many of our constituency executives are divided, and the party needs someone who understands the people and the structures to rebuild confidence and prepare us to recapture power in 2028,” he stated.

He maintained that the region remains politically competitive, emphasizing that constituencies such as Damongo, Salaga North, Salaga South, Daboya, Bole, Sawla and Yapei-Kusawgu are all winnable with the right leadership and strategy.

“The NPP has won four parliamentary seats in this region before, which proves these constituencies are winnable. What we need now is strategic leadership, evidence-based decision-making and a calm, experienced leader who can unite the party and mobilize the people,” he added.

Responding to questions on why he had decided to contest instead of allowing younger members to take up the position, Dr. Braimah compared the party’s current condition to a patient in critical care.

“When a patient is in intensive care, you don’t send a trainee surgeon into the operating theatre; you call an experienced professor of surgery to save the patient. The NPP in Savannah is at a critical stage, and it requires experienced leadership to rescue the party,” he said.

He dismissed suggestions that he had merely been a financier of the party, explaining that he had simply contributed to the party from the benefits he received while serving in government.

“I was never a financier of the party. I was an appointee who believed in giving back to the party that gave me the opportunity to serve. Today, in opposition, the party needs a leader who can inspire confidence and mobilize the resources necessary to rebuild the party,” he noted.

Highlighting his credentials, Dr. Braimah said his years of service as Northern Regional Secretary, current membership of the NPP National Council, and role as Co-Chair of the party’s Water and Sanitation Subcommittee have equipped him with the experience needed to lead the regional branch.

He stressed that the regional chairmanship is not an end in itself but an opportunity to strengthen the party and prepare it for electoral victory.

“I am not seeking this position because I need it to advance my political career. Rather, I want to help reposition the party. A leader who still has ambition will work tirelessly to ensure the party wins because success for the party means success for everyone,” he explained.

Dr. Braimah also pledged to make the NPP more attractive to young people and women through mentorship, empowerment and effective leadership.

“The youth want a political party with direction and leadership they can trust. We will empower our youth and women’s wings and demonstrate that the NPP remains the party that creates opportunities and employment for Ghanaians,” he said.

In a final appeal to delegates, he likened the choice before the party to selecting between two drivers—one experienced and dependable, and another unreliable.

“When you have two drivers, one experienced and one who disappears whenever danger comes, you naturally choose the experienced driver. The Savannah NPP deserves leadership that can withstand political pressure and command respect from our opponents,” he concluded.

Dr. Braimah’s entry into the Savannah Regional Chairmanship race is expected to intensify competition ahead of the NPP’s regional executive elections, as delegates prepare to elect leaders tasked with rebuilding the party and positioning it for success in the 2028 general elections.
