The Coalition for Development of Northern Ghana (NORTHCODE – GHANA) and the Center for Women Opportunities Ghana (CENWOPP) have carried out some education and sensitization outreach programmes in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District and the West Gonja Municipal, all in the Savannah region of Ghana on corruption and corruption related activities targeted at getting Christians to use the teachings of Christ as tools to eschew corruption in society.
As part of the program, Christian Mothers in Sawla were cautioned against these acts during an education and communication sessions to mark the African Union (AU) Anti-Corruption Day celebration which is observed annually to create the awareness on the negative impact of corruption on society and the Country at large.
The AU Anti-Corruption Day celebration which falls on 11th July each year was climaxed in Ghana through the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) in collaboration with it’s Local Accountability Networks, (LANeTS) across 31 districts in 14 regions of Ghana.
In the Savannah Region, the occasion was celebrated in the Damongo and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba districts where Christian Mothers were targeted in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district while the catholic church was targeted in the Savannah regional Capital of Damongo.
Interacting with her fellow Christian Mothers Association (CMA)) Members in Sawla, the Savannah Regional LANeT Organizer, Madam Gladys Sala Pettey who also doubles as the advisor to the Damongo Diocesan Christian Mothers Association encouraged her fellow women to be bold to speak out against corruption and it’s related activities in the system.
She also challenged the women to be True Citizens, Patriotic and bold enough to report corruption to the appropriate offices and further lamented that the corruption canker has contributed greatly to the huge unemployment problem in Ghana and in other African Countries.
Madam Gladys Sala who also described the situation as worrying, said it was getting out of hand and therefore needs all African Governments and their citizens to support the call by the AU to expose all those involved in such nefarious activities in their society.
In the West Gonja Municipality, the occasion was observed at two major churches which includes the St. Anne’s Cathedral Church in Damongo and the St. Theresa’s Church in Canteen where parishioners were encouraged to eschew corruption and corruption related activities and be guided by the teachings of Christ.
LANeT members later shared leaflets and other souvenirs which contained messages on how to approach corruption to worshippers and also encouraged them to spread the message widely through the display of Messages depicting Anti-Corruption to Worshippers at the St. Theresa’s church.
