The West Gonja Municipal Assembly has disbursed a total of GH¢295,500 to 88 persons with disabilities (PWDs) to support them in undertaking economic activities and improving their livelihoods.
The disbursement took place on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Conference Hall of the West Gonja Municipal Assembly and was witnessed by Assembly Members, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Municipal Finance Officer, Municipal Social Welfare Officer and other staff of the Assembly.
The initiative forms part of the Assembly’s efforts to support persons living with disabilities and enable them to become economically empowered and contribute meaningfully to the development of their families and communities.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro said the occasion marked the third time the Assembly had disbursed funds to persons with disabilities, with the initiative having commenced in 2025.
He emphasized that persons with disabilities were an integral part of the municipality, noting that they lived in the same households, worshipped in the same churches and mosques, and participated in various social and economic activities within their communities.
According to him, persons with disabilities contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the municipality and therefore deserved support to enhance their capacity to engage in productive ventures.
He noted that disability should not prevent beneficiaries from pursuing economic activities, particularly as many of them have families and dependants who rely on them for their livelihoods.
The MCE further stated that the government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, recognizes the importance of supporting persons with disabilities as part of efforts to promote inclusive development.
He assured the beneficiaries of the Assembly’s continued commitment to supporting them, urging them to use the funds responsibly to establish or expand viable businesses.
“As you receive this support, please also support yourself by putting it to good use,” he urged.
The Chairman of the West Gonja Disability Fund Committee, Mr. Aminu Fuseini, also urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds.
He encouraged them to invest in small businesses and other sustainable economic ventures that could improve their livelihoods, support their families and enable them to participate more effectively in their communities.
The 88 beneficiaries, who received a combined amount of GH¢295,500, were encouraged to regard the financial support as an opportunity to become economically self-reliant and contribute further to the development of the West Gonja Municipality.
