The Assembly Member for the Hangaline Electoral Area, Hon. Gorden Kumatey, has raised an urgent alarm over the deteriorating condition of the road from Galamsey Junction to the Damongo Main Cemetery, warning that the road could soon be cut off if immediate measures are not taken.
According to Hon. Kumatey, the situation has been worsened by the activities of heavy-duty vehicles transporting gravel along the stretch, with a collapsed culvert posing a significant threat to the safety and accessibility of the road.
He said he personally visited the affected area to assess the situation and subsequently reported the matter to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), the Municipal Works Engineer and the Regional Urban Roads Director for their advice and possible intervention.
Following the MCE’s directive, Hon. Kumatey on Tuesday, September 1, revisited the affected stretch together with the Municipal Works Engineer and a Deputy Coordinating Director, Mr. Denis Osei Acheampong to assess the situation and determine an immediate way forward.
He said after inspecting the road, the officials agreed that the Assembly should take immediate steps to stop heavy-duty trucks from using the affected stretch to haul gravel.
The decision, he explained, was necessary because the continued movement of heavy-duty vehicles could further weaken the already compromised road and aggravate the condition of the collapsed culvert.
“The safety of road users must come first,” Hon. Kumatey stressed in a public notice issued following the assessment.
He said the Municipal Assembly would work closely with the Urban Roads Department to identify an appropriate and lasting solution to the problem.
Hon. Kumatey has consequently appealed to operators of heavy-duty vehicles, particularly those engaged in gravel hauling, to cooperate with the Assembly and refrain from using the affected section of the road until further notice.
He has also urged motorists and other road users to exercise extreme caution when approaching the area and, where possible, use alternative routes until remedial works are undertaken.
The Assembly Member emphasised that the proposed restriction was not intended to disrupt legitimate economic activities but was a preventive measure aimed at protecting lives, property and public infrastructure.
He warned that failure to act promptly could result in the road becoming completely impassable, potentially disrupting the movement of residents and motorists who rely on the route.
Hon. Kumatey further assured residents that he would continue working with the Municipal Assembly, the Urban Roads Department and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the deteriorating situation receives urgent attention.
The development has heightened concerns over road safety in the area, with calls for immediate intervention to prevent further deterioration and avert a possible complete collapse of the road.
