The Municipal Chief Executive for west Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro has spearheaded a major clearing operation targeting heaped refuse dumps at the Almanara school in Ngbaripe and 7.7 Junction in the Hangaline electoral area.

The clearing exercise, which took place on Wednesday 4th March, 2026, was in response to growing concerns from the Assemblyman for that area, Hon. Gorden Kumatey ( Flemzy ) over the deteriorating sanitation conditions at the two sites. The refuse heaps had accumulated over time, posing significant health risks to residents in the area.
According to Hon. Kumatey, the initiative followed multiple appeals from residents and a series of consultations with key stakeholders, including the Environmental health Unit of the Assembly and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Castro.

“The refuse dumps had become not only an eyesore but also a breeding ground for diseases,” Hon. Kumatey stated. “Through collaborative efforts, we have taken a crucial step in safeguarding the health of our people.”
The operation which also included the clearing of refuse at Laribanga and Busunu was a joint effort involving the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, and the office of the Assembly Member. In addition to clearing the refuse, the initiative also sought to educate residents on proper waste disposal practices to prevent future reoccurrence.

Hon. Kumatey expressed his gratitude to the MCE, Hon. Yakubu Castro, for his swift response and support, as well as to the local media for amplifying the residents’ concerns. He also commended Mr. Zakaria Budali, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, the Municipal DRIP Coordinator, Mr. Salam and Zoomlion officers who worked tirelessly throughout the day to ensure the success of the clearing.
The exercise highlights the importance of community engagement and institutional collaboration in tackling environmental challenges and promoting public health across the municipality.
