The Chief executive officer for the Northern Development Authority (NDA), Lawyer Sulley Sambian on Tuesday, 16th May, 2023 paid a one day working visit to the Savannah Regional capital, Damongo.
Beginning his activities in the region, the NDA chief executive officer first paid a curtesy call on the Yagbonwura at his palace to seek for his blessings and to create the king’s awareness on his activities in the regions.
He later held a stakeholder engagement with the various MDCE’S, institutions and departments in the region to outline and discuss with them on the medium term strategic document of the NDA.
In a welcome address, the CEO of the NDA, Mr. Sulley Sambian explained that the stakeholder engagement was aimed at discussing the medium term strategy and the coordination role of the Northern Development Authority.
He unscored the fact that, the Northern Development Authority was established by law with the mandate to implement government flagship programmes and to coordinate development activities in the five Northern regions of the country.
Regarding the implementation aspects of their role, Mr. Sambian said they sometimes run into conflict with the Regional coordinating Councils and CSO’s because it sometimes appears they are competing for the same kind of space which is not healthy if the really want to take development a bit more higher.
He said as a new CEO, he saw the need to for them to focus more on their coordination role to bring about less conflict between the NDA and Regional Coordinating Councils.
He also urged that, the RCC’s and District Assemblies should not see the NDA as their competitors in any space as the are supposed to help government to ensure the acceleration of development in the Northern -Savannah ecological zone.
According to the NDA Chief executive officer, the NDA in trying to develop the North has decided to have a medium term strategic document to guide them into the future with five objectives which includes following;
- To increase household income in Northern Ghana by 20% through sustainable Agricultural production systems by the year 2027.
- To accelerate human development in Northern Ghana through access to quality social services by 2027.
- To promote private sector actions capable of delivering broad based and inclusive economic growth in the Northern – Savannah ecological zone by 2027.
- To sustain livelihoods by promoting capacity development across local communities.
- To create a professional transparent driving and accountable institution that delivered on it’s mandate by 2027.
He also noted that, there is no doubt that the medium term development was indeed properly brought out through an engagement with MDCE’S, RCC’s, development partners and CSO’s.
The savannah regional Minister, Mr. Saeed Muhazu Jibriel on his part indicated that the NDA was established to be a catalyst to speed up the development of the Northern sector to enhance the human resource of the people in the Northern.
He said the NDA since it’s inception has seen so many CEO’s because things were not going well as expected hence the appointment of the new CEO, Sulley Sambian and expressed hope that the CEO and his deputies will paradise shift from the previous NDA to an NDA that is set to do what is expected to do for their regions especially communities and towns at the various municipal and District Assemblies.
He further indicated that, he has doubt in his mind the capabilities of the new CEO to change the narrative from being just a name to delivering it’s mandate as an Authority.
The CEO later inaugurated some projects under the NDA including the National Ambulance office in Damongo and the Larabanga Islamic senior school.
The NDA was created to catalyze the transformation of the Northern-Savannah ecological zone through citizen’s mobilization with a strategic Plan to ensure the successful coordination, collaboration and facilitation
(CCF) for effective public sector delivery and private sector investment with a vision to transformed the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone(NSEZ) and make it a place of opportunity and free from poverty.
