Kpembe November 20, 2024 – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Savannah region engaged students of Kpembe Nursing & Midwifery Training College in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah region.

The NCCE’s with the engagement with the students was to deepen its sensitization drive on national cohesion, peace before, during and after the 2024 elections.

Mr. Issaka Zitor, NCCE regional director noted that it was the best time to engage tertiary students on peace and related activities since the nation will be conducting elections in less than a month.
The students were educated on the European union (EU) support for Preventing and Containing Violence and Extremism (PCVE) Action in the Northern Regions and other hot spots in Ghana.

The students were taken through violent extremism and terrorism, push factors such as unemployment, chieftaincy succession conflicts, land disputes, poverty, and others as issues extremist and terrorist groups usually use to recruit people to achieve their objectives.

Most importantly, students were educated on misinformation (fake news) ethnic and religious tolerance, vote buying, and electoral violence. Participants were advised to fact-check the source of their information before sharing with friends and the relatives and, not to fall prey to political actors who incite electoral and religious violence.

ASP Osman Agbaglo, Salaga South Assistant Police Officer took participants through online radicalization and recruitment by violent extremist groups and the ways to stop the practice. He admonished them not to believe so much in good offers from online sources because they are a good source to influence the thoughts and acts of the public.

Mr. Ikunjon Moses, Municipal Director for CHRAJ, East Gonja Municipality, took participants through the triggers and effects of violent extremism and the role of citizens to report suspicious characters to the security agencies for crime prevention in Ghana. He admonished participants to remain vigilant and be peace ambassadors in order to promote peace and development in Ghana.

Students expressed gratitude to the NCCE and the resource persons for the education and assured they will share knowledge gained with friends and family members.

This program was held at the auditorium of the school on Wednesday 20th November, 2024.
