Nalag marks international women day with Savannah women groups at Damongo.

The National Association of local Authorities of Ghana ( Nalag ) has on Wednesday, 15th March, 2023 marked this year’s international women day celebrations with women groups at Damongo in the savannah regional capital.

The event was held at the conference hall of the Savannah regional coordinating council and attended by several women groups from the West Gonja Municipality.

The savannah Regional Education Director, Hajia Katumi Nagtomah Attah who was the guest of speaker for the occasion explained that the global theme for the event will prevail throughout the year to encourage and galvanize action for women empowerment.

She said, the international Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and a day when women are recognized for their achievements with no regards to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

Hajia Katumi added that, the commemoration of the International Women’s Day has served as a rallying point to build support for women right’s and their participation in the political and economic arena’s and urged women in Savannah region to chosen and go by the theme “Embrace equality for our celebration”.

According to her, the term ‘equality’ refers to FAIRNESS and JUSTICE which is distinguished from equality where as equality means providing the same to all and equity meaning recognizing that they do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances.

She continued that, Embracing equity means “facing the truth that in their society, all people do not really start from a level playing field” and So, if they embrace and work towards equity, it means that they are working towards everyone getting the support and resources that they need to succeed.

Speakers including Madam Baba Munira Abigail, the municipal STEM coordinator at the Ghana education service and headmistress for the Damongo Senior high school, Madam Mercy Alugba said,.when talking about general societal inclusiveness, women are left out in so many areas of the daily life activities and that when talking about personality traits, women are expected to be accommodative, emotional, kind, sympathetic, take of the home in custody of certain areas of life.

They said, domestic behaviors are acts that prevents women to be included in certain areas of the human life with the notion that, Women are expected to take care of children, cook, tidying up the house and their works and for that matter, when it is considered for someone to be engaged more than 8 hours in a day then, the woman is considered not to be the right person simple because of her domestic behaviors which they said are overburdened and urged that, women should be seen as part of the working force.
