Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi, the Chief Director at the Ministry of the Interior, revealed the government’s proactive approach to bolstering border security.
This initiative involves providing financial support to the Ghana Immigration Service and other border management agencies to fortify border control by intensifying intelligence efforts and fostering cooperation with neighboring nations.
Speaking at a roundtable event on border management and community engagement in Accra, Mrs. Anno-Kumi emphasized the growing concerns related to the smuggling of small arms, narcotics, human trafficking, and the presence of non-state armed groups along Ghana’s borders.
These activities have adverse consequences for border communities, especially vulnerable members of society.
She underscored the pivotal role of border management in maintaining internal security, emphasizing its significance in Ghana’s National Migration Policy. Beyond equipping government agencies to handle mixed migrant flows and combat immigration-related crimes, the focus of border management includes thwarting irregular migration, human trafficking, smuggling, and other illicit activities.
Mrs. Anno-Kumi acknowledged the vital role played by border communities in safeguarding land boundaries and stressed the need for a mutually trusting and collaborative relationship between these communities and security services to ensure the security of both the borders and the surrounding areas.”
