The Savannah regional office of the Ghana Tourism Authority has embarked on tree planting activities to commemorate the 2023 world tourism day, which is being celebrated worldwide.
Interacting with media in Damongo, Mr Isaac Opirah explained the world tourism day is celebrated each year in September to create awareness about benefits and opportunities.
“The world Tourism Day is a day that’s been celebrated to create awareness about tourism’s socio-cultural, economic and political benefits to communities.
Since 1980, the event has been observed by United Nation world tourism organization member states on 27th September each year.
The 2023 world tourism day is being held in Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the theme; ‘tourism and green investment’.
The theme seeks to highlight the need for more and better targeted investment for people, for planet earth and for prosperity”, Mr. Isaac Opirah, the Savannah regional director of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) said.
Isaac Opirah added the theme for this year is a call for innovative solutions to not just the traditional investment that promotes and underpin economic growth and productivity but to the general wellbeing of humanity. It is also a call to action to both local and international communities, development partners, private sector investment actors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy to ensure sustainability of the planet, create opportunities for people and also, deliver inclusive prosperity through innovation and entrepreneurship”.
In Ghana, the national event is being held in the Ada district in the Greater Accra region with activities such as media interaction, tree planting exercise, fun games, and community durbar.
The Savannah region’s office is planting trees of different species that include Acasia, weeping willow and muria along the Damongo-Tamale road, office premises, among others, to commemorate the day.
Mr. Isaac Opirah believes the tree planting will help mitigate the negative climate change processes.
The Savannah regional GTA office has also engaged the media as a way of enhancing awareness creation towards the world tourism day and it’s importance to the area.
Mr. Isaac Opirah is of the view that tourism has enormous socioeconomic, political, traditional, environmental benefits to the people. It must therefore be celebrated with massive inclusion of all so that the benefits of tourism will be for all stakeholders.
