The leadership of the Fulbe community in the Damongo constituency led by Amadu Seidu in a press conference held at Damongo on Thursday, 16th May, 2024 has made a fervent appeal to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to allow their participation in the ongoing Voter ID card registration exercise.
The Fulbes argue that despite their longstanding coexistence and integration into the community, they face unjustified challenges from the NDC regarding their eligibility for registration.
Members of the Fulbe community emphasized their active involvement in local social life, including attending funerals, naming ceremonies, and other social events alongside other residents of Damongo. They also benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme, further underscoring their integration into the societal fabric.
The also expressed their bewilderment and disappointment over the NDC’s resistance, especially in light of former President John Dramani Mahama’s prior assurances.
During a visit to Damongo, John Mahama had promised that, if elected, his administration would ensure the issuance of Ghanacards to the Fulbe people.
The Fulbes perceive the current situation as discriminatory, arguing that it unjustly differentiates them from other ethnic groups within the constituency.
They highlighted their historical presence in the area, dating back to the days of their grandparents and reiterated their desire to formally participate in the civic processes of their home.
“Our participation in the Voter ID card registration is not only about being part of the community we have lived in for generations but also about obtaining official identification for ease of travel and other personal needs,” a spokesperson for the Fulbe community stated.
The NDC has yet to respond to these appeals and the situation continues to develop as the registration process proceeds. The Fulbe community’s request highlights broader issues of inclusion and representation that resonate across various regions of Ghana.
