On Wednesday, 8th May, 2024, Mr. Kadir Abdul Rahman, the Damongo constituency secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), addressed the media regarding recent disruptions during the limited registration process by former MP for Damongo, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu Galus.
He emphasized that the limited registration, initiated by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, aims to ensure the inclusion of young citizens who have reached voting age in the upcoming 2024 elections.
However, Mr. Rahman lamented an incident that occurred at the Canteen mobile registration centre on Tuesday, involving former MP Galus.
According to Mr. Rahman, Galus confronted security and EC officers, alleging their bias towards the NPP and accusing them of interfering with the registration process.
The NPP Constituency secretary admonished Galus for his actions, reminding him of the established procedures for addressing grievances, which include engaging party agents present at the registration centres or filing complaints through official channels.
Mr. Rahman stressed that such confrontations undermine the peace and harmony necessary for a democratic process.
Mr. Rahman further condemned Galus’s derogatory remarks against Lawyer Abu Jinapor, the current MP and NPP parliamentary candidate for Damongo, describing them as unbecoming of a former MP and urged Galus to desist from such behavior and uphold the dignity of public office.
Mr. Rahman reiterated the NPP’s commitment to peaceful participation in the electoral process and warned against further disruptions.
He called on Galus to respect democratic principles and refrain from obstructing the registration of eligible voters, including the Fulani community, whom Galus reportedly attempted to dissuade from participating.
The NPP constituency secretary reaffirmed the party’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process leading up to the 2024 elections.
