In the aftermath of an alleged violent attack on supporters of one of the claimants to the Damongo skins, Chief Yakubu Imoro Gbeadese, concerns have been raised regarding the prolonged delay in delivering judgement in the Damongo chieftaincy litigation. The alleged attacks which occurred on Thursday, 7th March, 2024, has prompted calls for transparency and swift action to address the escalating tensions surrounding the chieftaincy dispute.

During the attack, which left several individuals injured, including three with gunshot wounds allegedly inflicted by individuals associated with the opposing faction Chief Boresa Kelly, property damaged was extensive.

Among the items destroyed or damaged were: Five different sets of smocks, Two sets of lase dresses, Three pairs of trousers, One pair of sandals, Two sets of mosquito nets, Two sets of burial cloth, Two pairs of window curtains books and other documents, One office desk.

Furthermore, the attack resulted in injuries to six individuals, with some sustaining various degrees of harm from both gunshots and mob assaults.

About the Chieftaincy Conflict

The Damongo chieftaincy dispute dates back to April 2016 when the Gonja Traditional Council, under the leadership of His Royal Majesty, Yagbonwura Tuntumba Bore Essa I, announced Damongowura Gbeadese as the successor to the late Damongowura Lermu Jakpa Tuntumba II. Despite this decision, the litigation has persisted for eight years, leading to heightened tensions within the community.

In a press conference held on Tuesday, 12th March 2024, Yakubu Tahiru Prince, spokesperson for Chief Yakubu Gbeadese, expressed frustration over the delay in delivering judgement. He emphasized the principle that “justice delayed is justice denied” and called on the counsel of the Savannah Region House of Chiefs to provide clarity on the reasons behind the postponements.

The plea for expedited judgement comes amidst growing unease among the public and concerns over the potential for further violence if the dispute remains unresolved. Prince Tahiru stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability within the community, urging all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the recent violence, there is a collective hope for a swift and just resolution to the Damongo chieftaincy dispute. In the spirit of unity and cooperation, stakeholders are urged to work towards a peaceful resolution that upholds the principles of justice and fairness for all involved parties.
