In the aftermath of the politically charged clashes during the final funeral rites of the late Queen Mother of Busunu, the Member of Parliament for Damongo and Minister for Lands and natural resources, Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor, has taken steps to mend fences and extend condolences to the family of the late Busunu Queen mother.
A delegation, led by the Municipal Chief Executive for the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Hon. Musah Karimu Kusubari, accompanied by the Damongo Constituency NPP chairman and other constituency executives were dispatched to Busunu to express apologies and empathy to the grieving family.
During the visit, Hon. Musah Kusubari conveyed the deep regret felt by MP Jinapor over the unfortunate events that marred the funeral proceedings.
He emphasized the respect and regard the MP holds for the late queen mother (Busunuwurche) and the entire family, underscoring their non-partisan stance by abstaining from wearing party colors at the funeral grounds.
The Municipal Chief Executive lamented the disturbance caused by certain individuals who transformed the solemn occasion into a political arena, resulting in unrest and violence.
He highlighted the visit of some family members of the late Queen Mother to his office, where they expressed gratitude to both himself and the Damongo Lawmaker, Abu Jinapor for their contributions to the funeral rites.
The funeral, which was supposed to be a moment of mourning and celebration, descended into chaos as tensions between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) escalated.
The situation reached a boiling point when NDC supporters reportedly attempted to obstruct the entry of NPP representatives, leading to clashes and injuries among attendees.
In response to the violence, Hon. Abu Jinapor, along with other prominent figures including Chief of Staff, Hon. Frema Opare and former President Mahama, condemned the acts and called for peace and restraint among party supporters.
The incident has sparked concerns over the politicization of such events, with many fearing further unrest, particularly as the 2024 election year approaches. Calls have been made for swift and decisive action to defuse tensions and ensure the peaceful coexistence of supporters from both parties in future gatherings.
