The Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has assured the chiefs and people of Mpaha in the Central Gonja district of Savannah region that it will do whatever is legally possible to get the killers of 48 year old Iddrisu Fusheini arrested and prosecuted.
The Savannah regional minister Saeed Muhazu Jibril and Chairman of the Security Council stated this after visiting Debrewura and affected families at Mpaha on Monday 24th May, 2021.
” I want to assure the chiefs and people of Mpaha that the law will deal with the people who committed this act. This is a criminal act and the law will take it’s cause. Whilst the Debrewura and Gonja Traditional Council deal with the traditional aspect of the case, the police will also deal with the criminal aspect of it “.
REGSEC is also placing a ban on the gravel pit that is at the center of confusion untill the final determination of the case by the Debrewura Boresa Suluwu and the Debre Traditional Council is arrived at.
Mr Muhazu Jibril appealed to all functions to remain calm and allow the law to take it’s cause.
On Sunday, 23rd May, 2021, the Central Gonja district police command, led by D/Sgt. Godwin Kasu reported that at about 07:30hours, Debrewura Boresa Suluwu, the Paramount chief of Debre Traditional Area called Mpaha police to come to his palace to provide security for him and his elders to settle a land dispute ( gravel pit) between Lasumpe and Kejasa gates because he was sensing danger.
Police went to the palace and met the chief, his elders and some people.
During the settlement of the issue both parties became agrieved, started insulting themselves which resulted in fighting between them. Some of them sustained injuries and were rushed to Mpaha Health Center and Family Life Clinic at Kigbirpe for treatment.
A team of military and police personnel from Buipe were dispatched to Mpaha to support the police at Mpaha to maintain law and order and calm has since been restored at the place.
Police later visited Mpaha Health Center and met one of the victims, Iddrisu Fuseini aged about 48 dead, with two cuts on his chest and blood stains on his trousers and one Ibrahim Yakubu aged about 37 years and Alhassan Abubakari also aged about 42 years, both with multiple cuts on their bodies on admission receiving treatment.
Police proceeded to Family Life Clinic at Kigbirpe and met one Abaka Alhassan aged about 49 years also with multiple cuts on their bodies on admission receiving treatment.
The dead body has since being deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital Mortuary.
Briefing the REGSEC team, Debrewura Boresa Suluwu said the two gates Lasumpe and Kejase gates have been on each other’s head over who has traditional right to royalties to the gravel pit located at Mpaha. Both gates were invited to the Debrewura’s palace to settle the case.
However, all stakeholders who were expected to sit on case were not present at Debrewura’s palace last Sunday. So the case was postponed to next Friday 28th May, 2021.
Unfortunately, after the two groups left the palace, the chief was informed later about the attacks on themselves leading to the death of Fusheini and injuring a police officer on duty in the process.
The REGSEC team that comprises of the police, military, fire service, Immigration, crime officers, Chief Director and staff among others later visited the victims to appeal for calm.
Narrating their side of the story, the Bumbuwura (Lasumpe chief) said he is the 11th Bumbuwura to occupy the skins. And all the past ten (10) Bumbuwuras from the Lasumpe gate, supervised and took royalties from the gravel pit, where the sand winning is taking place. He said he can’t understand why all of a sudden the current Kejasewura from the Kejase gate is making an attempt to take over the collection of royalties from the gravel pit. He thanked the minister and his team for the swift response and appealed to REGSEC to help arrest and prosecute the offenders.
When the REGSEC team visited the Kejase gate, there was nobody in the house because all of them including the Kejasewura had fled the town.
It was alleged that the Kejase gate attacked the Lasumpe gate, resulting in the death of one person and injuring four (4) others. The police are conducting investigations.
