On Tuesday, 26th September, 2023, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibriel, the Savannah Regional Minister embarked on a visit to Buipe in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region to evaluate the extent of the flooding situation in the area and as well stand in solidarity with the affected residents.
Expressing empathy for the difficulties faced by those affected, the regional minister described the situation as a distressing experience and emphasized that the only lasting solution to the ongoing issue is the relocation of settlements along the riverbanks.
He acknowledged that the flooding not only impacted Buipe but also several other communities along the riverbanks, adding that the urgent situation necessitates collaborative efforts to find a sustainable resolution to prevent further suffering for the people.
Hon. Jibriel assured that he would collaborate with the central government and relevant authorities to address the recurring flooding in that specific area.
He also committed that the government will facilitate a smooth relocation process and halt construction activities in the flooded areas to alleviate the hardships faced by the affected population.
The Regional minister also expressed concern about the significant number of houses affected by the floods and clarified that the flooding was not due to dam spillage but rather a separate issue.
He promised that relief items would soon be provided from the Vice President’s office to aid the flood victims, while he collaborates with the government to address the situation.
The flooding crisis began on Sunday, September 17, 2023, and has steadily worsened.
