The Vicar General of the Damongo Catholic Diocese and Administrator at the Damongo Catholic Secretariat, Very Rev. Fr. Martin Muosayir has called on parents not to discriminate in investing in the education of their children.
Speaking on behalf of the Bishop of the Damongo Diocese at a PTA meeting of the St. Anne’s Girl’s Senior high school held at the schools premises on Saturday, 12th November, 2022, the Vicar General said he has observed with concern that majority of parents prefer to invest more in the education of their male child than their female child which for him, should not be the case.
He explained that as a parent, you can never tell which sex of your children could be of support to you in the future and so there is the need to treat them fairly especially in the areas of education.
Very Rev. Fr. Martin Muosayir noted that in 1995 when the Damongo Diocese was created, a survey was conducted which revealed that there was a 96% illiteracy rate among the female population and 76% illiteracy rate among the male, revealing that there was more illiteracy rate among girls than boys which informed the then Bishop to establish the St. Anne’s Girl’s Senior high School to help reduce that high illiteracy rate among the girl child.
He regrettably added that, the current enrollment of the St. Anne’s Girls High school as compared to the St. Cyprian Boys School at Sawla shows that more parents are willing to sponsor to pay fees for their boy child than for the girl child which for him, needs a rethink and a change of mind because parents do not know what the future holds for their girl child and that, irrespective of how much you spend on your boy child, he might turn out to disappoint you the parent.
He reiterated that, every child is a precious gift from God and depending on what you invest in that child, the child will turn out to be a source of hope to you the parent and there by challenging parents not to discriminate against the girl child but offer them any possibilities at their disposal for a better life for the child tomorrow.
The School currently has it’s 2022/2023 academic year’s application forms in circulation across all parishes in the Damongo Diocese for Admissions into SHS 1 and that, all parent who wished to have their children enrolled into the school can visit the nearest parish to pickup their admissions forms.
