The West Gonja Municipal chief executive, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari has called for a step up in the revenue mobilization of the assembly to enable them meet the increasing recurrent expenditure and budgetary provisions.
The MCE made the call in a sessional address at the first ordinary meeting of the third session of the West Gonja Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, 20th July, 2022.
He explained that, the performance of the assembly in their revenue mobilization and generation within the first half of the year 2022, has declined a bit as compared to first half of the year 2021 which is affecting them as an assembly to accomplished their mission.
He noted that, revenue mobilization is one of the areas that has yielded less results in the West Gonja municipality, despite various measures and strategies adopted by the assembly over the past years to avert the situation.
Hon Musah indicated that, the total amount of revenue collected at the end of June this year was GHC 106,656.00 representing 15.8% of the estimated amount of GHC 672,485.00 for the year’s collection, an indication that the performance of revenue mobilization has declined adding that, revenue inflows continues to be a herculean task of the assembly.
According to him, some of the problems associated with low revenue mobilization in the municipality include; the general poverty level of thepeople, lack of reliable data on rateable items, properties and businesses,
Ineffective supervision and monitoring of revenue collectors by the assembly and the
uncooperative attitudes of tax payers in the municipality.
He disclosed that, the municipal’s total share of the District Assemblies Common Funds for 2022 was estimated at GHC 3,916,642.56 of which, an amount of GHC 720,817.63 was received and used to carry out projects and programmes of the assembly adding that, the total allocated amount for DPAT is GHC 1,204,747.00 based on the last assessment which the assembly scored 88%, out of which an amount of 54,378.00 is for capability building grant and an amount of GHC 1,144,509.65 out of the allocated amount is received and would be used to implement some plans and budgets of the assembly.
He concluded by urging revenue collectors of the Assembly to intensify their work in other to step up revenue mobilization to generate more revenue to help hence the development of the area.
