The West Gonja municipal assembly has on Wednesday, 6th July, 2022 served final eviction notices to all persons having unauthorized structures on pavements within the main streets of the Municipal capital to remove them before 25th July, 2022.
The Municipal Engineering officer, Mr. Inusah Dramani who led a team of officers from the Physical planning office, the Environmental protection agency, the Ghana National fire service and NADMO to serve final notice to the affected victims said, the victims have up to 25th July, 2022 to remove all unauthorized structures from pavements on the main principal streets of Damongo to pave way for easy movement of pedestrians especially school going children who usually struggle to share the highway road with moving vehicles.
He explained that, the move became necessary after several attempts to get them out from the pavements proved futile adding that, the Assembly will embark on a demolishing exercise from the 15th of July, 2022 to get rid of all unauthorized structures of defaulters who will be charged for the cost of removing such structures by the West Gonja Municipal Assembly.
According to Mr. Inusah Dramani, the decision to get this structures out from the pavements was decided by the West Gonja municipal assembly after a stakeholder meeting was held to the effect on Friday, 17th June, 2022,
which was attended by heads of departments, security agencies, the traditional council, Hon. Assembly members, the GPRTU and the clergy who unanimously agreed to embark on a campaign and the subsequent removal of all unauthorized structures on the pavements and waterways.
Some of the affected victims who sell fruits on the pavements however, appealed to the team and the municipal Assembly to extend the pavilion at their sitting space to enable some of their members who have no space in their pavilion to also join them in the pavilion to sell their fruits.
They also called on the Municipal Assembly to extend electricity to the place to help them sell at night.
