Authorities in the Savannah Region have launched an intensive investigation following the mysterious disappearance of a newborn baby from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga.
The incident, which occurred on June 10, 2026, has sparked concern among residents and health officials, prompting a joint effort by the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Police Service to locate the missing child and establish the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
In a press release issued on June 11, 2026, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate (SRHD) confirmed the unfortunate incident and expressed deep regret over the development.
According to the statement signed by the Savannah Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, hospital authorities immediately initiated a search within the facility after the disappearance was reported. However, the search yielded no results, leading management to formally report the matter to the East Gonja District Police Command for further investigation.
“The Savannah Regional Health Directorate regrets to announce an unfortunate incident involving a missing newborn at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga,” the statement noted.
The Directorate extended its deepest sympathies to the parents and family of the missing baby, assuring them of the Health Service’s full support during the difficult period.
Health authorities disclosed that they are working closely with the hospital management, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and facilitate the safe return of the child.
The Regional Health Directorate also sought to reassure the public that the safety, security, and well-being of patients, newborns, and all clients remain a top priority of the Ghana Health Service.
As investigations continue, the Directorate has appealed to members of the public who may have information regarding the whereabouts of the missing baby to contact the nearest police station, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate, or the East Gonja District Hospital. Officials assured that any information received would be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
The disappearance has generated widespread concern within the municipality, with residents calling for swift action to locate the baby and strengthen security measures at health facilities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at reuniting the baby with the family and ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
