The CIID Vocational Institute in Daboya, located in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region, has provided 260 trainees with essential tools to enhance their skill development. At the institute’s inaugural ceremony on Monday, November 18, 2024, beneficiaries received sewing machines, hairdryers, and electronic kits as part of efforts to combat unemployment through technical and vocational training.
The distribution included 120 sewing machines, 120 hairdryers, and 20 electronic kits, empowering students to transition smoothly into self-employment and sustainable careers. The institute, which currently enrolls 260 trainees and employs 25 staff members, also provides monthly stipends to support students financially during their training.
Transforming Lives Through Vocational Training
Speaking at the event, Prof. Adams Sulemana Achanso, Chairman of the CIID Vocational Institute Board, emphasized the institution’s role in addressing youth unemployment by equipping students with practical skills. He attributed high unemployment rates to a lack of hands-on education and commended the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration for prioritizing technical and vocational education.
Established in April 2024, CIID is accredited by the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) and is in the process of being absorbed into the national education system. The institute has already achieved national recognition, with some graduates qualifying for the Ghana Police Service.
Government Support and Regional Development
Savannah Regional Minister Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril lauded the founder of the CIID Vocational Institute, Prof. Kalamonia, for his dedication to skills development. He highlighted the institute’s contribution to employment and education in the region, which includes three vocational schools currently operational in Damongo, Sawla, and Salaga.
The minister also detailed the Nana Addo administration’s broader educational and infrastructural achievements, such as the establishment of a secondary school in Larabanga and the Daboya bridge project, set to be completed next year. He urged the community to support Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections to sustain these development efforts.
A Promising Future for Daboya
The inauguration was attended by several dignitaries, including Professor Elliot Haruna Alhassan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies; Hon. Alhaji Asei Shieni, MP for Daboya/Mankarigu Constituency; Hon. Adam Eliasu Red Bawa, DCE for North Gonja District; and representatives from Ghana Gas, TVET, and Wasipewura Anyame Kabagya II.
