Young individuals in Damongo have received training in media and information literacy as part of the Penplusbytes/DW Akademie MIL micro-Grant scheme.
The event, which occurred in Damongo on 1st September, 2023 was led by Mr. Osman Abubakari Sadiq.
During the session, Mr. Osman enlightened the participants on the concept of literacy and its various forms, delved into the significance of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and guided them on how to detect and combat misinformation and fake news.
Regarding MIL, Mr. Osman provided insights into accessing, analyzing, evaluating, and verifying media information before sharing or acting upon it.
He further emphasized the importance of MIL, highlighting it’s role in helping individuals critically assess the credibility of information, distinguish between fact and fiction, comprehend the media’s influence on public opinion, and recognize and resist manipulation and exploitation by media sources.
Participants were also instructed on spotting fake news, understanding the distinctions between data, information and knowledge and gaining insights into information disorders such as disinformation, misinformation, and malinformation.
