The West Gonja Municipal Health Directorate on Wednesday, 18th February, 2026 held its 2025 Annual Performance Review Meeting in Damongo, highlighting significant improvements in healthcare delivery and honoring eleven outstanding staff and facilities with citations and household appliances including TV sets, blenders and microwaves.

Despite describing 2025 as a challenging year, the Municipal Director of Health Services, Mr. Kenneth Nwin-Nyaabu Kpankpari announced impressive gains across key health indicators. ANC coverage rose to 102.5%, skilled deliveries increased to 76.4%, and postnatal care coverage climbed to 78.2%. OPD attendance also jumped to 69,354 cases.

The municipality maintained 100% malaria testing before treatment for two consecutive years, recorded zero malaria deaths, improved TB case notification to 60%, and increased TB treatment success to 82.1%. Notably, maternal mortality remained at zero for the past two years, while the stillbirth rate dropped to 2.6%.

Strong results were also recorded in national campaigns, with over 99% coverage achieved in all four cycles of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention and 87% of targeted girls vaccinated during the HPV campaign.
However, the Municipal health Director acknowledged declines in Family Planning acceptance and a rise in neonatal mortality, assuring stakeholders of renewed strategies in 2026.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, commended health workers and pledged continued collaboration, announcing plans to construct two new CHPS compounds, upgrade the Busunu Health Post, complete stalled facilities, provide motorbikes for nurses, and integrate health services into the planned 24-hour market project.

The ceremony also recognized top-performing facilities including Damongo Health Centre and Murugu CHPS, alongside dedicated individual staff members for their exceptional service.
With zero maternal deaths, improved TB and malaria outcomes, and expanding infrastructure plans, the West Gonja Municipal Health Directorate has positioned itself for an even stronger and more impactful 2026.
