In a press conference held on Wednesday, 20th March, 2024, the Deputy Chairman of the electoral commission of Ghana incharge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, addressed allegations of stolen Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) from the Electoral Commission’s stores.
Contrary to claims made by the Minority Leader, Mr. Tettey clarified that no BVDs were stolen.
According to Mr. Tettey, during a routine servicing of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits, the Commission discovered the theft of five laptops from the kits, not seven BVDs as alleged and further emphasized that those kits are separate from the Commission’s Registration Data Systems and cannot manipulate election outcomes.
He said the stolen laptops, which were lacking specific activation, serve no purpose beyond their individual components.
Highlighting the distinction between the Biometric Voter Registration kits and the Biometric Verification Devices, Mr. Tettey emphasized that both require activation to function for registration or verification and he assured the public that the stolen laptops contain no sensitive data and thereby minimizing the impact on the integrity of the upcoming elections.
He explained in his statement that, upon detection of the theft, the Commission promptly notified security agencies and initiated investigations to apprehend the suspects.
Mr. Tettey stressed the Commission’s commitment to protecting its assets and urged public figures and citizens to verify information before dissemination to maintain public trust.
The Electoral Commission reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and integrity in its operations and elections, emphasizing its reliance on security agencies to safeguard its installations.
