The West Gonja Municipal Assembly in the savannah region has disclosed that, plans are underway to relocate all market women and traders who parade at the Damongo weekly/Saturday market to engage in their socio economic activities to the newly built canteen market.
The move according to the Assembly is a temporal one to pave way for construction works on the dilapidated Damongo weekly Market to begin.
This was revealed at a pre-construction stakeholder consultative meeting held on Tuesday, 6th September, 2022 at Damongo with heads of departments, chiefs and market women.
The municipal chief executive, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari explained that, though the move will be a difficult one for traders, but the newly built canteen market is the only safer and spacious place with the essentials of a market in the municipal capital to accomodate the market women temporarily considering the large population that visits the weekly market for their activities.
Though the market women preferred using the daily market, the MCE urged them to consider their safety and that of others following the congestion and vehicular traffic that it will bring to bear in the Damongo township should the daily market be considered.
He called on the traders to consider the decision of the Assembly and take advantage of the facility at canteen since it is a just temporal one.
The MCE with officials from the Assembly later visited the daily market to interact with the market women and to assess the market
