The Damongo weekly/Saturdays Market has been awarded to a contractor to be reconstructed to befit the status of a modern market to improve economic activities in the Damongo area.
At a short ceremony on Thursday, 8th September, 2022 to hand over the market and work documents to the executing contractor, Brightening construction company Ltd, the Chief Director at the Savannah Regional coordinating council, Mr. Adu Asamoah in his address to the market women said, he was extremely happy for the reconstruction of the aged – long market which has been a long dream of many leaders within the region to have the market reconstructed.
He explained that, the reconstruction of the market was in the interest of the market women which will ease the stress the go through in carrying out their trade activities in the market .
Mr. Asamoah appealed to the market women to from time to time, monitor the progress of work and to report to the Assembly of any irregularities once work commences and urged officials of the Municipal Assembly to ensure that, all existing stalls and stores are documented to ensure fair distributions when work at the market is completed.
He also appealed to the contractor to execute the project with excellence without delay.
The West Gonja Municipal chief executivejj, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari on his part disclosed that, the facelift of the market is by kind courtesy, the member of parliament for the Damongo Constituency, Hon. Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor who visited the weekly market earlier this year to announce to the market women of his plans to reconstruct the market to help boost trade and accelerate economic and social development in the area.
He expressed gratitude to the market women for their continuous prayers and support to the course of development in the area and urged the Contractor to deliver a good job.
Speaking on behalf of the Accra based construction firm, Brightening construction company Ltd, Mr. Emmanuel Mensah explained that their firm is mandated to execute a good job for the people of Damongo within a period of 12 months and will employ the services of the locals in the area in their work.
He said, the market when completed, will have it’s floor paved and have a transport terminal, a 12 seater modern institutional WC toilet facility, Security post, Butcher shop, a mosque, stores, Stalls, 2 unit urinal and an office block.
The aged – long Damongo weekly market which is currently in a deplorable state was established in March, 1981 by late Yagbonwura Abudu Mahama Kurabaso of blessed memory.
Hon. Musah was accompanied by the West Gonja municipal coordinating Director and some officials from the Assembly, some traditional leaders of the area and market women to signal the commencement of the reconstruction works at the Damongo weekly market.
