Local Accountability Networks Ghana (LANet), Savanna Region under the leadership of its Focal Person, Mr. Zume Cletus on Thursday, 8th December, 2022 held sensitization on corruption for students of the Damongo Senior high school to mark international anti – corruption day under the theme: ” Uniting the world against corruption for development, peace and security”.
The 2022 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) seeks to highlight the crucial link between anti-corruption and peace, security, and development. At its core is the notion that tackling this crime is the right and responsibility of everyone, and that only through cooperation and the involvement of each and every person and institution can we overcome the negative impact of this crime. States, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth alike all have a role to play in uniting the world against corruption.
In her opening remarks, the headmistress of the school, Madam Mercy Alogba explained that, the definition of corruption according to the dictionary seeks to talk about illegal behaviors by very prominent people in the society who carry out this corrupt practices because of their personal gains either for money or power.
She however noted that, the practices of corruption begins at the school level and often practiced by students who fail to program to engage themselves with their books which leads to cheating during examinations.
The headmistress used the occasion to admonish students to stay away from corrupt practices and take advantage of the freebies of the free senior high school initiative by the government and study hard for a better future.
Speaking on the theme of the program, the resource person, Rev. Samuel Mahama Dinkeri, a Leadership Consultant and the Deputy Focal Person of LANet in Savanna Region explained that, the engagement with the students forms part of their activities to mark this Years international Anti – corruption day which is an annual event celebrated on the 9th of December which Northcode – Ghana, with support from Ghana Anti Corruption Coalition deemed necessary to hold an engagement with the student body of Damongo Senior high school to draw their attentions to the need to stay away from corrupt practices.
He said, corruption is a global canker that has eaten deeply into the fabric of the society which they as an Organization saw the need to collaborate with the Ghana Anti – corruption coalition to address the situation.
Rev Dinkeri added that, the essence of the engagement with the students was to draw their minds and attention to some of the very important aspects of corruption adding that, if the students are able to learn about corruption influence and it’s negative impacts on their lives and that of the economy, it will go a long way to bring about development and sustainable peace to the country.
The students through the engagement were taken through some thematic areas of the canker including; the meaning of corruption, the manifestations of corruption, ways of reporting corrupt practices and discussions on how to overcome corruption through accountability.
The presentations were very much welcomed by the students who shared their ideas and thoughts on the topics shared with them.
