Busunu is a living repository of Northern legends, a place where the past comes alive in the present. The line between history and mythology is blurred. Once you step your foot there, you will sense it immediately, the presence of ancestors spirits, the echoes of the footsteps of our forebears, the silence of a land that has borne the burden of carrying the traditions of the Gonja kingdom and savannah region for centuries prior to the division of the country by the creation of the current boundaries and political structures.
Few communities within the Savannah region compare to Busunu in terms of its rich history, its integrity, and its soft power.
This is the land of giants. They giants are not mythical creatures with large footprints. They are real people, men and women who were forged in hard work, generosity, wisdom, and quiet strength. These giants include the mothers who rise before the sun rises to cultivate and provide food and shelter for their families over generations with an unwavering discipline that surpasses the wealth of many families. The giants also include the brave warriors who protected the community with their bravery when they sensed danger in the past. The great paramount Chiefs of the traditional area who had such authority that, their words could bring peace and resolve disputes even before the advent of modern administrative and judicial systems.
Finally, these giants include the young guardians of the day, who preserve the traditions of their forebears as the world continues to rush away from them.
In short, this is the Savannah Region’s actual Kingdom of the Giants.
Moreover, Busunu holds a unique and irrefutable truth: it is the land where the mother of President John Dramani Mahama was born. Therefore, the lineage of Busunu flows through Ghana’s highest office, which reminds us all that greatness often arises from quiet corners.
However, Busunu’s influence does not stop at the level of the presidency. This small town has left a lasting mark in virtually every area of national life. In education, politics, security, administration and chieftaincy. Virtually all of the most highly educated, influential, and respected individuals across the Savannah region either have their matrilineal ancestry linked back to Busunu or claim Busunu as their hometown. For generations, Busunu’s geographical position near Damongo, the regional capital has had a profound influence on Damongo itself.
The sounds and sights of daily commerce in Busunu Market give way to an endless supply of proverbs from which traders create business strategies, all of them echoing the moral systems of an ancient past. Within the compounds of Busunu are shrines, carefully maintained and reflecting the continued presence of a belief system that refuses to disappear. In ceremonies, the young perform dances that have been performed by their forefathers for centuries, and each step is filled with the weight of loyalty, courage, respect and other values.
In terms of cultural richness, Busunu is envied by many communities in the Savannah Region. The identity of Busunu remains intact. The history of Busunu lives through its stories.
And the people of Busunu know exactly who they are. The record of history portrays Busunu as a front line of bravery, a place of origin for warriors who honed more than just their spears, they developed their characters. Generation after generation of stories of resilience, sacrifice, and unity were passed down. Although rarely recorded in books, archives, or texts, these stories continue to guide how Busunu exists today.
And the land will always remember. It will always remember the fearless hunters, whose exploits to this day, inspire young boys racing across the country. It will always remember the courageous women, who supported families during times of famine and hardship. It will always remember the wise chiefs, whose leadership ensured peace long before the advent of modern forms of government. It will always remember the old festivals — the drums, speaking in tongues older than time; the songs, rising like smoke; the elders offering blessings to ward off bad fortune. These memories are not dusty relics. They live within the very heartbeat of Busunu, guiding every aspect of everyday life.
However, beneath its cultural pride lies a deep-seated yearning, a need for development that respects the heart and soul of Busunu. Residents of Busunu want schools, clinics, and economic prosperity, but they also want it to honor the spirit of Busunu. They want the world to see their culture as a living breathing entity, that can be the driving force behind modern-day success.
In many ways, the ability of Busunu to remain steadfastly in its own history, while looking towards a better future is perhaps Busunu’s most powerful attribute. The town doesn’t seek to compete with the rest of the world; instead, it seeks to have the world acknowledge the value of the town itself.
Busunu is currently developing into something new, very slowly but persistently. A new generation is emerging, whose steps reflect the strength of the giants of old, in their thoughts, in what they say, and in how they view the world.
Busunu does not represent a small footnote in the larger history of the Savannah Region or the Gonja Kingdom. Instead, it serves as the foundation that has enabled every other aspect of Busunu to be established. It is therefore the foundation stone of Heritage, and the guardian of Identity.
Thus, on December 26th of 2025, Busunu will hold its inaugural Homecoming. The Inaugural Homecoming of Busunu is a never before seen, or experienced gathering of all of the children, children’s children, relatives, friends, and well wishers of Busunu, regardless of their location in Ghana, and around the World, who identify themselves as part of the Family.
The Homecoming is much more than an event, it is an occasion for us to connect once again with those who came before us, it is an opportunity to Celebrate our Common Heritage, to Honor Our ancestors, and to establish a path forward for the future of Busunu. It is an opportunity to stand in the exact spot where our forebears stood and feel the very same wind that gave them the strength to stand up straight.
Each person who has ever been a citizen of Busunu, regardless of whether he or she now resides in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale or elsewhere in the world is invited back home. Come home to the land of giants. Come home to be among the stories that have defined you. Come home to honor your ancestry. Come home to help shape the Busunu of the future.
For in Busunu, history is not just remembered – it is being lived.
