The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, together with the Board Chairman and a team of technical experts, has undertaken a working visit to the White Volta at Yapei in the Savannah Region. The visit formed part of ongoing assessments to explore the river’s potential as the main water source for the Tamale–Yendi–Damongo Water Project.
The evaluation seeks to determine the river’s capacity and long-term suitability to supply potable water to residents of Tamale, Yendi, Damongo, and surrounding communities. The team engaged consultants, hydrologists, and local stakeholders to review the river’s flow patterns, sustainability prospects, and environmental considerations.

During the visit, the team also examined possible risk factors that could affect the intake point and the overall viability of the project. Managing Director Adam Mutawakilu reaffirmed the NDC government’s commitment to ensuring reliable and safe drinking water for communities in the Northern and Savannah regions. He described the Yapei stretch of the White Volta as a promising option to meet the rising water demands driven by population growth and urban expansion.
The Board Chairman of Ghana Water Limited Eric J. Biliguo Adama commended the technical team for their dedication and emphasized the need for thorough feasibility studies to guarantee value for money and quality service delivery. The Tamale–Yendi–Damongo Water Project, one of the most significant water supply interventions in northern Ghana, is expected to enhance public health, improve hygiene, support economic activities, and help address the region’s long-standing water challenges
