The Concept to the ‘Tyrebin’ project.
As humans moved from the stone age, nomadic life was no longer relevant. Humans began to settle in communities and in groups to better exploit the power of unity and social significance. This is how societies evolved. Waste was then generated in large quantities and management became a challenge even until now.
Against the above background, the school environment also creates a society where waste is generated. As schools are training and learning institutions, it will be great to incorporate waste management in the curriculum not in the orthodox or traditional way but a more practical and inclusive manner. This is the objective of the ‘tyrebin’ project in schools.
It is to teach students at the high school level segregation of waste and the reuse of waste in a more practical way.
The project is being implemented by Eco Warriors Movement with Otuo-Akyampong Boakye as the project lead.
Used car tyres which would have ordinarily become nuisance in the environment are innovatively reused as waste bins to collect waste. We begin with collection of plastic waste and after the idea of waste segregation is understood we introduce organic waste collection.
We have successfully implemented the project in some schools and are currently gathering data on the project.
