The Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medicine Practitioners have taken a significant step forward in promoting healthcare access by inaugurating the Savannah Regional Executive Committee.
The ceremony, held at the Damongo Community Center, witnessed the convergence of key stakeholders in the healthcare sector.
Among the dignitaries present were Mr. Abdulai Mahama, representing the Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Mr. I.K Momori, the Savannah Regional Chief Pharmacist, and Madam Gertrude Yentumi, the West Gonja Municipal Health Director including the National President of OTC, Northern Region executives and members of the Savannah Regional Over-The-Counter Medicine Practitioners.
In his welcome address, Mr. Sumani Iddrisu Mohammed, Chairman of the West Gonja District Over-The-Counter Medicine Practitioners Association, emphasized the importance of consolidating efforts across districts to enhance the efficiency of the association within the region.
He highlighted the necessity of unifying separate groups to streamline operations and ensure optimal service delivery.
The newly appointed executive committee, carefully selected to represent each district, comprises individuals with proven experience and dedication.
Mr. Sumani Iddrisu Mohammed assumes the role of Chairman, supported by Vice Chairman Mr. Jato Karim and Secretary Mr. Kantama A. Ganiu, among others.
During the swearing-in process led by the national president, Alhaji Hassan Couboo, members were reminded of the association’s commitment to quality healthcare provision.
Alhaji Couboo urged unity among members and emphasized the importance of ethical practices, discouraging the acquisition of medicines from illegal sources.
Addressing concerns about retired nurses operating OTC medicine stores independently, Alhaji Couboo stressed the need for collaboration and adherence to regulatory standards.
Echoing these sentiments, Mr. I.K Momori, the Savannah Regional Chief Pharmacist, emphasized the significance of proper prescription practices and the responsible disposal of expired medical substances.
He also expressed concerns about the proliferation of drug sales by unqualified individuals on the streets, urging stricter regulation in that regard.
In a message delivered on behalf of the West Gonja MCE, Mr. Mahama Abdulai stated that the Municipal Assembly is committed to supporting the OTC Medicine Practitioners Association and pledged to provide the necessary infrastructure and assistance, including office accommodation for the Pharmacy Council to address challenges and enhance service delivery.
The inauguration of the Savannah Regional Executive Committee marks a milestone in the efforts to improve healthcare access and quality in the region. With a dedicated team at the helm and support from various stakeholders, the OTC Medicine Practitioners Association is poised to make significant strides in fulfilling its mission.
