The West Gonja Municipal Environmental health Unit in the Savannah region of Ghana in collaboration with world vision Ghana on Friday, November 24, 2024 observed this year’s World Toilet and Handwashing Day in Damongo.
The event, attended by students from various schools and department representatives, included a cleanup at the Yagbonkura’s palace.
World Toilet Day aligns with World Vision’s efforts to promote health in the West Gonja municipality, emphasizing the role of traditional leaders in fostering sanitation practices.
Participants received health education on household latrines and handwashing from Ghana Health Service and Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit officers.
The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Mustapha B. Adam highlighted the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, emphasizing the global push for improved sanitation.
He addressed challenges in managing public toilets, citing indiscriminate waste dumping, and urged community leaders to champion the theme: “Accelerating Change for Safe Sanitation, the Role of Traditional Leadership.”
World Vision’s Savelugu Cluster Programs Manager, Mr. Felix Apeti commended the West Gonja Environmental Health Unit for leading this important commemoration.
He emphasized the need for attitudinal change, revealing low percentages of households with proper sanitation facilities and handwashing practices. He urged the public to reject poor sanitation habits, stressing the connection between sanitation and water.
The manager encouraged students to be ambassadors against open defecation, advocating for home toilets and improved hygiene practices in the West Gonja municipality.
