Residents of Ngbaripe ( Al Manara) in the Hangaline – Ngbaripe – Alhassankura electoral area within the West Gonja municipality of the Savannah region are living in fear due to a century-old erosion problem.
The intensifying rains have left them concerned about the safety of their lives and properties.
Reports indicate that residents in the affected parts of the community are unable to sleep peacefully or tend to their farms, as they are uncertain when the ancient erosion gutter might pose a threat to their homes.
Despite efforts by local stakeholders to establish a proper drainage system as a long-term solution, these attempts have been unsuccessful.
The community feels neglected by government representatives and politicians who promised to offer assistance to the situation but failed to deliver.
During an interview with Mr. Tahiru, a teacher and resident of the area, he shared his personal loss of over Ghc 8,000 used to construct a protective apron to shield his home from heavy rains that could potentially wash it away or be consumed by the century-old erosion gutter.
Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain as the apron was swept away overnight by the rains.
Residents are now appealing to individuals, NGOs, the Member of Parliament for the Damongo constituency, Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor, and the government to come to their aid.
They explained that their primary need is a functional drainage system, as they are currently living on the edge, grappling with the imminent threat posed by the century-old erosion problem.
