On Tuesday, 12th September, 2023, a significant step towards progress took place as the coordinators of the UK-Ghana Gold programme paid a visit to the office of the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibriel in Damongo.
Launched in August this year in Accra, the UK-Ghana Gold programme is a collaborative effort between the UK and the Ghanaian government under the leadership of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
Its primary mission is to combat illegal mining activities and safeguard vulnerable children in selected districts across Ghana.
The delegation, led by Mr. Mark Asamoah, the Ghana programme coordinator and accompanied by the youth coordinator and Mr. Chris Aston, the UK-Ghana coordinator, engaged in a productive discussion with the Savannah Regional Minister.
The focus of their conversation was on how to effectively implement the programme within the savannah region.

Mr. Chris Aston emphasized the programme’s commitment to rescuing vulnerable children and eradicating illegal activities in mining areas.
The Regional Minister warmly welcomed the team and expressed his gratitude for extending such a vital programme to the Savannah region.
He encouraged the team to collaborate with the relevant authorities in the districts, such as DISEC (District Security Council) and REGSEC (Regional Security Council) with a reminder that DISEC is typically chaired by the District Chief Executive.
He assured the team of his unwavering support and an open-door policy for any assistance they may require.
The team later engaged with the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Peter Baba Atianak and his Deputy, ACP Solomon where both parties discussed security matters vital to the programmes success.
