
The people of Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality joined the rest of the nation to commemorate Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with a colourful parade held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Damongo Astro Turf Park.

The event brought together traditional authorities, government officials, educators, students, and residents to celebrate the country’s independence under the national theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”
Among the dignitaries present were the Paramount Chief of Damongo, Seidu Kelly Boresa I, heads of departments, security agencies, political party leaders, and other invited guests.

Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja Municipality, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, described the occasion as a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to national development.
Speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, the MCE extended warm greetings to the people of the municipality and emphasized the significance of Ghana’s independence.

He paid tribute to Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, and other freedom fighters whose sacrifices paved the way for the nation’s independence.
According to him, the theme for this year’s celebration challenges citizens to move beyond ceremonial activities and actively contribute to building a prosperous and united nation.

The MCE highlighted several development initiatives underway in the municipality, including the planned establishment of two universities and a Girls’ STEM Senior High School. He also mentioned the construction of three classroom blocks at Agric Settlement, Wawato, and Janfaru in Damongo, as well as improvements in facilities at Damongo Senior High School and Ndewura Jakpa Senior High Technical School.

In the health sector, he disclosed that land has been secured for the construction of the Savannah Regional Government Hospital, with procurement processes underway. Additionally, three CHPS compounds are currently being built at Sori No. 2, Achulokura, and Zongo in Damongo to improve healthcare delivery in the area.
Hon. Castro further called on citizens to remain united and committed to peace and development, stressing that Ghana’s strength lies in its diversity and collective determination to build a better future.

He also encouraged students who participated in the parade to take their education seriously, describing them as the future leaders and innovators of the country.
A total of 15 schools participated in the march past, displaying impressive discipline and patriotism.

The celebration ended with a renewed sense of patriotism as participants and spectators reflected on Ghana’s journey since independence and the collective responsibility to build a prosperous future for the nation.
